(x,y) coördinates in PostScript code are in units of 1/72". A scaling command lets you use any unit you want--e.g., prefix your code with 72 72 scale to give coördinates in inches.

PDF followed this convention until someone decided to make the unit adjustable. That was unnecessary and not in the spirit of PDF being a standard.

This change had an amusing effect on the maximum page size supported by Adobe software. From their spec (highlighting mine):

I like Cormac McCarthy's screenplay for The Counselor (2013)—most of it, anyway.

I haven't read his books, not even No Country For Old Men (even though I liked the film based on it). If memory serves, there are only three movies where I read the book they're based on—and all three are by Stanley Kubrick.
