Wednesday 29 Nov 2006 comment?
Aren't we lucky to be alive now. Three of the most famous conjectures in number theory have been proven, to wit: Either that, or the advent of low-cost book publishing on demand has brought a crackpot out of the woodwork. For some reason, I'm not gonna buy the books to find out which it is. Thursday 23 Nov 2006 comment? Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. I'm thankful to live where I do, and to have good friends. Saturday 18 Nov 2006 1 comment I was at (part of) a bachelor party last night. It started at 8:00 but I didn't show up until 10:00, after having rolled into town from a few days climbing at J-Tree. That schedule worked out great, it had me at the party for some of its better moments. I had no interest in staying for the whole evening, it was quite the un-Tommylike gathering. I went only because I'm friends with the groom and wanted to congratulate and support him. It was un-Tommylike because I was the only homo, the only one not drinking, and possibly the most introverted of the people there and thus out of my element in a fair-sized group. I get bored fast with the fractured, pointless conversations that go on at most social events--even when the participants are sober. I also find marriage to be a strange custom. I've written here before about how I like not having to fit my life into an established tradition. I'd rather invent my own customs and my own rituals to declare them, but I realize that's not for everyone. The climbing on Thursday and Friday was good. None of my regular partners could go, so I found someone off rockclimbing.com. That's a roll of the dice, I don't just mean safety-wise but also in regard to whether you get someone you like spending time with. This time it worked out OK. I really wanted to get in a few days at J-Tree this season, I love that place. Today, rest. Monday 13 Nov 2006 3 comments My doctor recently put me on a different antiviral regimen (one reason was for once-daily dosing instead of twice). Prescribing information for one of the new drugs includes this (emphasis mine): Nervous System Symptoms: Fifty-three percent of patients receiving SUSTIVA in controlled trials reported central nervous system symptoms compared to 25% of patients receiving control regimens. These symptoms included, but were not limited to, dizziness (28.1%), insomnia (16.3%), impaired concentration (8.3%), somnolence (7.0%), abnormal dreams (6.2%), and hallucinations (1.2%).Tell me about it. A couple days ago, I dreamt that I was having sex with a woman. Talk about abnormal. These symptoms usually begin during the first or second day of therapy and generally resolve after the first 2-4 weeks of therapy. We'll see. Wednesday 08 Nov 2006 2 comments A loyal reader asked what I thought about the election. Sure, I'm happy to see the Repubs get their comeuppance--but somehow I'm not that excited. I mean, Iraq is likely to remain a disaster for some time no matter who is in power. And I'm just not a big fan of the Democrats. I'm not jumping up and down about the lesser of two evils. (Strange expression, jumping up and down; the down part isn't really jumping.) I'm writing about politics more sparingly these days, partly because I realize that other people do it better than I can. But yes, It's nice that voters kicked the bums out. Friday 03 Nov 2006 3 comments This has been quite an election season for outed Republicans and their associates, with this week bringing news about Rev. Ted Haggard buying meth and hiring the services of Mike "muscle stud" Jones. Outing is controversial; in this case, I support Jones for exposing Haggard. The preacher's privacy isn't as important as what's at stake in this election. Dear readers: what do you think? audio clip: BBC summary, with British pronunciation of mas·sage. ![]() You've probably had Google suggest alternative keywords ("Did you mean:") for words that it thought might be misspelled. You may have even laughed at some of the suggestions. But the alternative keyword Google suggests for this search takes the cake. update, 12/31/06: there's no more "did you mean" on the page returned, but Google's attempted spelling correction does affect the ads ("Sponsored Links"). Wednesday 01 Nov 2006 comment? In response to requests from readers: Shadows-- I've pretty much just been practicing the pieces I will be playing at a wedding next month, I want to get them totally wired. I'm playing my marimba arrangements of
I like all the pieces except that last one, a show tune from the 1920s that the bride's grandfather wants to sing. Sasha-- Setting aside what I think of Micros--t as a company, I don't care for a lot of their aesthetic choices--like their logos (e.g., the fucking butterfly) and sounds (e.g., the stupid noises XP makes on startup and shutdown). I'm gonna guess that whatever they hired Robert Fripp to do, it had more of Micros--t written all over it than it did Fripp. But maybe I'm being too pessimistic. |
